Question What is the Status of the Artist Act?

Answer It is a Canadian federal government Act respecting the status of the artist and professional relations between artists and producers in Canada. In the Act, the Government of Canada recognizes many things including "the importance to artists that they be compensated for the use of their works, including the public lending of them". Futher; it extends many rights including "the right of artists and producers to freedom of association and expression" and "the right of associations representing artists to be recognized in law and to promote the professional and socio-economic interests of their members".

The Act guarantees the right of artists to join associations that can represent their professional interests and the right to bargain collectively with producers for the purpose of reaching agreement on the minimum terms and conditions under which an artist will provide services to those producers.
